Presidential Teaching & Research Professor Awards

The Presidential Research and Teaching Awards recognize the research and teaching excellence of two faculty members, one who has distinguished themselves as a researcher and the other who has distinguished themselves as a teacher. The categories are not meant to be mutually exclusive; both activities are to be recognized and rewarded. Each award carries an allocation of $7,500 in support of faculty development for the three years of the award ($22,500 in total).

Eligibility

Nominees must be a full-time tenured (Associate or Full Professor) or non-tenure track (Senior or Principal Lecturer) faculty member. This award may only be received once.

Nomination Process

Per section 12.4 of the UMBC Faculty Handbook, the nomination of candidates for the awards should be made by individual departments by whatever method each department chooses, but with the following provisos:

(a)  The nominee for the award given in recognition of scholarly or artistic accomplishment should be supported by documentation;

(b)  Departments should be encouraged to consult with their councils of majors in the selection of awards for teaching;

(c)  A department may nominate only one faculty member in each category, i.e., teaching and research;

(d)  A department may choose not to submit any nominations.
